Trevor Story, SS, Colorado Rockies

Trevor Story has had a bit of a roller-coaster start to his Major League career. It started on the highest of highs in 2016, dipped down to some disappointing lows in 2017, and then skyrocketed back up last year.

This may leave managers with Story on their teams wondering what the true product looks like. We should take advantage of that uncertainty before Story validates last year's production.

It is true that Story had a down year in 2017, and his struggles weren't due to randomness. That's just what happens when you strike out a whopping 34.4% of the time.

But Story was a completely different player in 2018 as he put that strikeout rate on a slip-n-slide down the Rocky Mountains.

Story's ProgressionStrikeout Rate
201631.3%
201734.4%
201825.6%

That 25.6% strikeout rate for Story came even after he got off to a slow start, striking out 31.1% of the time through the end of May. After that, he never had a month-long strikeout rate higher than 26.9% the rest of the way.

The big concern with Story is that the strikeouts could always come back, which would put a major dent in his stock, especially with the talented infield prospects the Colorado Rockies have in the high minors. Story, though, does seem to have carried his gains in this department into spring training.

Spring NumbersStrikeout Rate
201622.0%
201731.0%
201836.7%
201922.4%

This should help keep Story in the lineup and keep his triple slash high, even if it does come down a bit from last year. It'll also ensure he gets on the basepaths, and he did plenty of damage there last year, too.

Story finished 2019 with 27 stolen bases after entering the year with 15 in his career. He has added three this spring, meaning he's likely to keep on running during the regular season. This makes Story someone who will contribute with plenty of homers, runs scored, runs batted in, and steals while not killing you in batting average. When it comes from a shortstop playing his age-26 season at Coors Field, it looks even more delectable.

Story managers are likely still riding high from last year, so it won't be easy to pry him away. But he still may be a bit underpriced. Story is 26th in Tristan H. Cockcroft's dynasty rankings, and he's 20th on FantasyPros. With all that Story has to offer, it wouldn't be a shock if he were sniffing the top 10 by season's end.
