Cubs' Addison Russell receives retroactive 40-game suspension

Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell has been suspended by Major League Baseball for 40 games without pay, retroactive to September 21, under its domestic violence policy.

What It Means:

Russell has agreed not to appeal the ruling. The shortstop was placed on administrative leave September 21 after his ex-wife publicly described years of physical and emotional abuse by Russell. The suspension will extend through the first month of the 2019 regular season. He is arbitration-eligible this winter and may have played his last game in a Cubs uniform. Russell turns 25 in January.

Russell averaged 7.0 FanDuel points in 130 games for the Cubs this season. He slashed .250/.317/.340 with 5 home runs, 38 RBI, 52 runs scored, and 4 steals across 465 plate appearances.
