Max Scherzer lands on Nationals' IL with back strain
The Washington Nationals placed starting pitcher Max Scherzer on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 26, with a mild upper-back strain.
Scherzer suffered the injury Thursday, in his first start since sitting out three weeks because of a mid-back strain. The 35-year-old right-hander will not be rushed back into the rotation, per comments from Nationals manager Davey Martinez. Erick Fedde was recalled from Double-A Harrisburg in a corresponding roster move and is expected to replace Scherzer in Washington's rotation.
Scherzer is 9-5 in 20 starts this season. He owns a 2.41 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 189 strikeouts and 25 walks over 134 1/3 innings.
