Marlins' Jose Fernandez killed in boating accident
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed early Sunday morning in a boating accident according to Andy Slater of 940-AM WINZ.
This is devastating news for the Fernandez family, baseball and the Marlins. Fernandez has established himself as one of the most dominant pitchers in the league and he was in the midst of a stellar season. He escaped from Cuba when he was just a teenager and arrived in the United States in 2007. He made the Marlins' roster in 2013 as a 20 year-old and promptly won the Rookie of the Year. Sunday's Braves and Marlins game has been canceled because of this tragedy.
Fernandez was having a fantastic season, making his untimely death even more tragic. He is currently leading all qualified pitchers in xFIP (2.56), SIERA (2.80) and wins above replacement at 6.2. Rest in peace, Jose.
