Pirates' Francisco Cervelli (wrist) says swinging bat is still painful

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli had to be replaced in Sunday's game due to pain in his left wrist and hand.

What It Means:

Cervelli has been playing through some pain for some time, and he admitted after Sunday's game that swinging a bat and catching balls down in the zone was painful. With the Pirates struggling to keep pace in the NL Central race, there is a chance they could shut down their catcher. This would likely mean more of Chris Stewart, and it's possible they recall Elias Diaz if Cervelli is out for an extended period.

If he doesn't have to spend time on the disabled list, our models currently project Cervelli for a .252 batting average, with 1 home run, 11 RBI, and 12 runs scored over 118 plate appearances remaining this season.
