March Madness: Ranking the Sweet 16 Teams Using Advanced Analytics

Gonzaga entered the NCAA Tournament the top-ranked team, according to our numbers. Has any of the teams remaining in the Sweet 16 knocked them out of that spot?

Going into the big dance, the Villanova Wildcats were the top overall seed, but the Gonzaga Bulldogs entered as the nation's best team, according to our own analytics. The Bulldogs' 20.54 nERD -- which means we would expect them to win by more than 20 points against an average team on a neutral court -- was nearly a half-point better than that of the Wildcats.

After a week and 52 tournament games, Villanova's gone. Other high seeds in Duke and Louisville were also sent pack, but Gonzaga and fellow 1 seeds in Kansas and North Carolina still remain.

Now that the dust has settled from a crazy first weekend of college hoops, we can sit back and analyze the 16 remaining teams who are still fighting for this year's title. Which of them is the best? Is it still the Zags? Or has one of the hotter teams managed to take them over?

ESPN has already given us their take, but how do the numbers stack up? Starting with the lowest ranked team by nERD, let's evaluate.
