Running Back Market Shares

1. Is Phillip Lindsay Taking Over?

Prior to the season, there were two camps: the Devontae Booker incumbent club and the side that favored rookie Royce Freeman as the true workhorse for the Denver Broncos. But it turns out neither side was prepared for the usage of undrafted rookie Phillip Lindsay.

Through two weeks, Lindsay has out touched his backfield mates. He is currently leading all Broncos backs with 32 touches, to Freeman's 23 and Booker's distant 7.

Denver coach Vance Joseph continues to preach a “hot hand” approach when it comes to his backfield.

According to Next Gen Stats, Freeman is still facing the dreaded stacked box (rushes against eight or more defenders in the box) more than any of the Broncos' running backs. Freeman has seen a stacked box on 13 of 23 carries (56.5%) while Lindsay has faced a stacked box for 7 of 29 carries (24.1%).

Currently, Lindsay is outplaying Freeman, and Booker is getting some third-down work. Lindsay looks like the guy to own here.

2. Chris Thompson Is Back Where He Belongs

After a horrific end to his 2017 season, Washington running back Chris Thompson came into 2018 with promise, but there was trepidation in drafting him by many fantasy owners.

If you set those fears aside, how does the third-most receptions in the NFL sound?

With 19 grabs, Thompson trailis only Michael Thomas (28) and Christian McCaffrey (20) in catches. He is thriving in his supercharged pass-game role.

Targeted 21 times, Thompson has a catch rate of 90.5 percent, with an average of 8.2 yards per reception.

Although he has only 9 carries through two games, his role has served him well and should continue to do so if he keeps seeing an average of 10.5 targets per game from Alex Smith.
