Dante Pettis to 'compete' for starting role in San Francisco

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Dante Pettis must "compete" for his starting role, said head coach Kyle Shanahan.

What It Means:

This comes after Pettis played while other offensive starters rested in the 49ers' preseason opener. He was targeted once in 17 snaps. "We’re trying to see who our starting receivers are and I wanted to get him a chance to get out there," said Shanahan. "Dante has a lot of room to grow. He can still get a lot better." Meanwhile, rookie wideouts Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd both turned in strong showings, so Pettis may need to prove his worth over the next couple weeks.

Pettis is the WR35 in numberFire's preseason fantasy rankings. Our models expect him to record 761.8 yards and 6.44 touchdowns on 60.5 receptions and 99.3 targets in 2019.
