Matt Breida emerging as 49ers' second running back

San Francisco 49ers undrafted free agent rookie running back Matt Breida appears to have secured a role in the offense, writes Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.

What It Means:

Breida rushed 7 times for 29 yards in Sunday night's third preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, and he also snagged his only target for a 5-yard gain. The 22-year-old Georgia Southern product was the first back off the bench for the 49ers, ahead of Joe Williams and Raheem Mostert, while Tim Hightower and Kapri Bibbs didn't see the field. Based on the game reps and widespread praise from local beat writers, it sounds like Breida will be Carlos Hyde's top backup in 2017. He's a SPARQ stud with eye-popping metrics, making him at the very least worth a look as a late-round flier in deeper fantasy formats.

Breida averaged 7.9 yards per carry (YPC) and scored 17 touchdowns during his junior year in 2015, culminating in being nominated for the Doak Walker Award as one of the nation's best running backs. In 2016, those numbers fell off a cliff for no discernible reason, as he averaged a mere 3.8 YPC while finding the end zone only 3 times.
