Elijah McGuire pegged as Jets' third-down running back

New York Jets running back Elijah McGuire is expected to be the team's third-down option this season, writes Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

What It Means:

“Eli looks fantastic to be perfectly honest,” running backs coach Stump Mitchell said. “I’ll tell you who I see Eli as — and he’s in the Hall of Fame. Eli has the skill set to be a LaDainian Tomlinson if he was given that opportunity." The 2017 sixth-rounder only averaged 6.6 offensive touches per game as a rookie while playing behind Matt Forte and Bilal Powell, but it sounds like McGuire is the favorite to beat out Powell for pass-catching duties in 2018. The Jets signed Isaiah Crowell in March to handle early downs.

numberFire's models project McGuire to rush 35.7 times for 128.4 yards and 0.60 touchdowns this upcoming season while also catching 11.8 passes for 99.5 yards and 0.19 touchdowns.
