Red Wings put Niklas Kronwall (knee) on long-term injured reserve

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall (knee) has been placed on long-term injured reserve.

What It Means:

Being placed on long-term injured reserve carries a minimum of a 10-game absence, but Kronwall is expected to be ready to return when his 10 games are up. That means he could possibly be back on the ice against the Boston Bruins on February 14. Kronwall had his knee scoped a few weeks ago, but he hopes to be able to practice next week.

Kronwall has 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) in 45 games played this season, but perhaps more importantly, he has an average time on ice of 22:45. He is not helping drive possession when on the ice however, as his Corsi For Percentage is 49.0, and his Relative Corsi For at Even Strength is -5.5, both career lows. We project him to tally another 14 points (two goals, 12 assists) over the remaining course of the season.
