Belmont Horse Racing Picks For Sunday 5/2/21

It's a great time to dive into horse racing, and FanDuel Racing gives you the chance to do just that.

Starting at 1:00 p.m. EST, we have nine races at Belmont Park. Using numberFire’s projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets.

As always, keep an eye out for scratches and changes, and check the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions.)

NY Traffic, Race 2

FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/5

Race 2 is an Allowance race for state-bred runners going 7 furlongs. The top pick via numberFire’s data is NY Traffic (3/5) with leading jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. riding for EPO trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. NY Traffic makes his 2021 debut and is working well with a pair of bullet workouts. His last two races were out-of-the-money finishes in last fall’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

Control Group (5/2) is a seven-year-old who is still running well with a pair of wins in February and March, including a 102 speed figure last race.

Nemo’s Fortune and Hereby, Race 5

FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/1 and 5/1

Race 5 is a Maiden Special Weight for 12 state-bred runners sprinting 6 furlongs. numberFire has Nemo’s Fortune (3/1) on top with Big Bobby (8/1) and Hereby (5/1) hitting the board. Nemo’s Fortune finished a close second in his debut a month ago but was checked sharply at the start. Big Bobby makes his debut for trainer Bill Mott, and he breaks from the outside next to Hereby, who also makes his debut as a son of Hard Spun.

Lake Avenue, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 7/5

Race 8 is the $200K Grade II Ruffian Stakes for older fillies and mares racing 1 mile. numberFire's algorithm projects the two favorites to decide the race -- Our Super Freak (8/5) and Lake Avenue (7/5).

Our Super Freak has never missed at the distance with a win, two runner-up finishes and a third in five races, according to Horse Racing Radar. She gave the mighty Monomoy Girl a solid run when finishing second last race in February while posing a 102 speed figure in the Grade III Bayakoa.

Guaranteed Tip Sheet prefers Lake Avenue to win, and she won her last race with the highest last-race speed figure by a wide margin. She’s 2-for-2 this year with a pair of triple-digit speed figures while showing a strong turn of foot.
