2022 Cotillion Stakes Betting Odds and Contenders Preview
Saturday features a massive afternoon of racing at Parx Racing in Philadelphia with no less than 10 stakes races. A strong field of nine 3-year-old fillies, led by Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath, have been entered in Saturday’s Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing with seven of the nine listed at 8-1 or lower in the morning line odds coming in at the top of their form. Four of the entries are last-out winners, two others ran second in their last start, and five scored a lifetime best speed figure in their last race. There are two strong favorites and ample betting value spread throughout the field.
Carrying a purse of $1 million, the Cotillion Stakes is a vital stop between the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff and the marquee summer meets. The former is the premier route race for fillies at the World Championships.

Cotillion Stakes Prep Results
After two second-place performances at Saratoga Race Course in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks and Grade 1 Alabama Stakes, Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas’ Secret Oath will be making her eighth start of 2022 at Cotillion. Training for her sixth career Grade 1 start at Saratoga, the Arrogate filly could give Lukas his first Cotillion victory. The Kentucky-bred’s best race came on the eve of the Kentucky Derby, in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks when she bested Nest and 12 other contenders.
Searching for her first Grade 1 victory for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, Adare Manor ships all the way from Southern California. The Uncle Mo filly broke her maiden by 12 lengths at Santa Anita Park and won the Grade 3 Las Virgenes by 13 lengths. She then placed second in both the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks and Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico.
Gun Runner sired, Society, owns four wins from five starts and suffered her only career loss coming in fourth in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga. The Peter E Blum Thoroughbreds filly returned to win the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks and we are excited to see if she will give Steve Asmussen his fifth Cotillion victory.
Another Hall of Famer, Todd Pletcher, will try for his fourth Cotillion win with a trio of runners—Goddess of Fire, Green Up, and Shahama. Shahama was undefeated in four starts in Dubai before returning to the U.S. In her last two starts, the daughter of Munnings scored second place in the Grade 2 Mother Goose at Belmont Park and a victory in the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks. Red Oak Stable's, Goddess of Fire came third in the previous Grade 1 Alabama while Team Valor International's Green Up won the last Cathryn Sophia at Parx.
Cotillion Stakes Contenders
Green Up: The daughter of Upstart enters the Cotillion with four wins in four starts making her graded stakes debut at this race. The Dark Bay filly won the Boiling Springs Stakes by 5 3/4 lengths over Radio Days. In her most recent start, she won the Cathryn Sophia by 3 3/4 lengths earning her a career-high 104-speed rating.
Adare Manor: The Uncle Mo filly will be making her first start in more than four months on Saturday, the toughest test yet for The Bob Baffert-trained filly. Adare Manor broke her maiden by 12 lengths at Santa Anita securing an uncontested lead. Then in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G3), Michael Lund Peterson's Adare Manor contested the pace before taking over and opening up by 13 lengths late.
Goddess of Fire: The first of three from Todd Pletcher’s barn, Goddess of Fire is one of only two fillies in the field that have not yet won a stakes race. Trained by John Patrick Ryan, Goddess of Fire is by Toronado (IRE) out of Burnt Fingers (IRE).
Beach Daze: New Jersey-bred filly, Beach Daze, has won four of her last six races coming in off a 6-furlong allowance win at Monmouth Park. However, the Bay Filly will be up against a whole new class of filly when she runs against this loaded field on Saturday.
Gerrymander: Mother Goose (G2) winner, Gerrymander, has beaten some good fillies in the Tempted last year. Gerrymander is by Better Than Ready (AUS) out of Civita (AUS) and trained by Stuart Kendrick.
Secret Oath: In her last five Grade 1-level races, Briland Farm’s homebred, Secret Oath, has only failed to hit the board once. She comes into the 1 1/16-mile race off consecutive second-place finishes in the Alabama Stakes (G1) and the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) both at Saratoga Race Course. Overall, the daughter of Arrogate has 5 wins in her 11 career starts and is still a favorite to beat in this Grade 1 test.
Shahama: Rattling off four impressive wins in Dubai, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag for the daughter of Munnings. Making her first start in the Kentucky Oaks was a tough spot, but she did not run poorly after falling too far back early. Since then, she lost out to Gerrymander in the one-turn Mother Goose but then won the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks.
Morning Matcha: Morning Matcha, is one of seven stakes winners in the field. This Pennsylvania-bred filly earned that distinction at Parx back in March. Morning Matcha is by Central Banker (USA) out of Home Ice (USA) and trained by Robert E Reid.
Society: Gun Runner’s daughter gets another shot at Grade 1 at Cotillion after getting off to a poor start in the Coaching Club American Oaks. Lightly raced, Society won her only start as a 2-year-old, in her debut at Keeneland by a length from off the pace while overcoming a troubled start at 27.80-1 odds.
Cotillion Stakes Past Winners Past Performances
In 2021, Stonestreet Stables' homebred Clairiere has been closing in on a Grade 1 win. And on September 25 at Parx Racing, the daughter of Curlin, trained by Steve Asmussen, got the job done as her late run carried her to victory in the Cotillion Stakes (G1). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the 2020 scheduled stakes had to be canceled.
Then in 2019 Cotillion winner, Street Band, came out widest of all and gained the lead at the 1/8 pole through 1 mile in 1:37.44. Street Band drew off late but persevered to win by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:44.20. It was another 3 3/4 lengths back to 22-1 Horologist third.
Run since 1969, six eclipse award winners have participated in the Cotillion Stakes: Shuvee, Susan’s Girl, Revidere, Ashado, Havre de Grace, and Untapable. Since 2000, only two fillies have completed both the Cotillion and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. In 2004 Ashado won both events along with the Eclipse Award for champion 3-year-old female. A decade later, Untapable also completed the feat earning year-end honors for her division.
Other notable Cotillion wins that placed them in the top 3 in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff include Midnight Bisou (2018), Songbird (2016), Close Hatches (2013), My Miss Aurelia (2012) and Havre de Grace (2010).

Parx Race Course
Parx Casino and Racing is a Thoroughbred horse racing venue and the biggest casino gaming complex in Pennsylvania. The main track comprises a 1-mile oval with 7 furlong and 1 & 1/4 mile chutes and a surface of sand, clay, and loam. The width of the track is 80 feet with 974 feet from last turn to finish.
Parx Racing, formally known as Philadelphia Park and before that as Keystone Racetrack opened on November 4, 1974. On December 28, 1984, International Thoroughbred Breeders purchased the Bensalem Oval for approximately $40,000,000 changing the name and look of the Bensalem Oval.
