Sonny Gray has struggled mightily in 2018, pitching to an elevated 13.2% walk rate. He has also struggled to prevent hard contact, as his hard-hit rate against sits at 36.4%. All of that adds up to a pitcher with a 5.12 SIERA.

Still, at such a cheap price, and against what would appear to be an easy matchup, some might consider rostering him in hopes that the talent will showcase itself. However, it likely won't against this dangerous Oakland Athletics team.

The A's rank first in the majors in hard-hit rate (40.4%) and eighth in fly-ball rate (37.7%) against right-handed pitching this season. In playing in Yankee Stadium, they also get the benefit of moving from a bottom-10 park for offense to one inside the top-10.

In Yankee Stadium, some of those hard-hit fly-balls will be sure to leave the yard, and with Gray's walk issues, some of those home runs could have runners on base to boot. There is too much risk involved in using Gray in this spot.
