3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Tuesday 9/28/21

Stacks are the backbone of cashing daily fantasy baseball lineups. Correlation drives upside, creating the potential to place high or even win GPPs when your selected stacks explode offensively.

This column will do the digging and the dirty work to determine which stacks are worth rostering each day. Scoring upside will fuel the stacks that get the nod. Sometimes that will lead to chalky selections, but contrarian stacks will get their fair share of love too.

In addition to utilizing the touted daily stacks in handbuilt lineups, numberFire premium members can throw these highlighted stacks into an optimized lineup using our DFS Sharpstack tool. Our hitting heat map tool is also available to premium members looking for more stacking options. It provides valuable info such as implied total, park factors, and stats for identifying the quality of the opposing pitcher.

Let's take a look at the top stacks on today's main slate.

Colorado Rockies

Patrick Corbin has been a trainwreck for two seasons now. He recorded a 4.66 ERA last year. However, he's been worse this year, with a 5.92 ERA, 4.34 expected fielding independent pitching (xFIP), 4.65 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA), and 1.96 homers per nine innings allowed, per FanGraphs. He's hardly the caliber of pitcher who can toe the slab at Coors Field and avoid the Colorado Rockies roughing him up.

The Rockies rank tied for third in weighted on-base average (.346 wOBA) and fifth in isolated power (ISO) at home this season. You can stack anyone from the Rockies. However, Corbin's inability to handle righties makes Colorado's right-handed hitters most desirable. Specifically, Corbin's yielded a .563 slugging percentage and .388 wOBA to righties.

As for the righties I'm most interested in, the two building blocks are Trevor Story ($3,800) and C.J. Cron ($3,800). First, Story has a .402 on-base percentage, .383 ISO, .453 wOBA, and 158 weighted runs created plus (wRC+) against lefties at home in his career. Second, Cron's produced a .461 on-base percentage, .455 ISO, .526 wOBA, and 220 wRC+ against lefties at home in his first year with the Rockies.

Minnesota Twins

The Minnesota Twins are an excellent pivot off the Rockies or secondary stack to mesh with them. Tyler Alexander has transitioned from relieving to starting for the Detroit Tigers, and his 3.79 ERA overstates how seamlessly he's switched roles. The lefty's 5.17 xFIP and 4.84 SIERA are harbingers of regression.

Unsurprisingly, the lefty has a traditional platoon split. Thus, he's held lefties to a .252 wOBA in 2021. However, righties have teed off for a .495 slugging percentage and .349 wOBA. As a result, I'm honing in a few righties from the Twins.

First, Byron Buxton ($4,000) is a great target with a .270 ISO and 137 wRC+ against lefties since 2020. Second, Josh Donaldson ($3,200) is a superb selection with a .371 on-base percentage, .288 ISO, and 145 wRC+ against southpaws this season. Finally, Mitch Garver ($2,600) is a nifty power option, with a .253 ISO against lefties since 2018.

Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox are my favorite pivot away from Coors Field. However, because their top options have sizable salaries, I'm not inclined to spend down on a pitcher to use the stacks together.

The Pale Hose rank sixth in wRC+ (106) against righties in 2021. In addition, they rank tied for 10th in wRC+ (108) over the last 30 days. Therefore, they're a challenging opponent for an underwhelming rookie righty like Riley O'Brien making his big-league debut. The 26-year-old pitcher has a 4.55 ERA and 4.61 xFIP in 23 appearances (22) starts totaling 112 and 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level this year.

If he's underwhelming in the minors, what do you think the likeliest outcome is against a talented offense like Chicago? My expectation is struggling that results in the White Sox lighting up the scoreboard. My favorite options are Yasmani Grandal ($3,800) and Eloy Jimenez ($3,400). Both players generate plus power, with Grandal rocking a .275 ISO and Jimenez producing a .224 ISO against righties in 2021. Gavin Sheets ($2,400) is an enticing option if he spells one of Chicago's regular starters tonight, too.
