Former Rockies' catcher Wilin Rosario elects to become a free agent

Former Colorado Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario has elected free agency.

What It Means:

The Rockies designated Rosario for assignment, and he cleared waivers. It was expected he would test the free agent market instead of accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A, which he has done. His catching days are likely over, but teams could still be interested in Rosario as a first baseman or designated hitter.

Rosario played in only 87 games this season, hitting .268/.295/.416 with six home runs, even with the Coors Field bump. He also posted a walk-to-strikeout ratio of just 0.14, which would have tied for worst in baseball if he had enough plate appearances to qualify. Despite the poor season, Rosario will be just 27 years-old by Opening Day 2016 and has shown the ability to hit 20 home runs when given regular playing time.
