Trevor Gott headed to Nationals for Yunel Escobar
Reliever Trevor Gott is headed from the Los Angeles Angels to the Washington Nationals in exchange for infielder Yunel Escobar, according to beat writer Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Gott is just 23 years-old and is not eligible for free agency until 2022. He becomes a solid long-term addition to a Nationals' bullpen that has been significantly reworked this offseason.
Gott pitched 47 2/3 innings this season -- his rookie year -- and posted a nice 3.02 ERA and great 57.2 ground ball percentage. However, his 4.44 xFIP was significantly higher than his ERA, suggesting he was a little lucky, and his 5.4 strikeout-to-walk percentage was sixth worst among relievers with at least 40 innings pitched. He's a hard-thrower (his average fastball velocity this season was just under 97 mph) and has had high strikeout totals throughout the minors, so it's likely he'll start missing bats as he progresses at the major league level.
