Melky Cabrera

Melky Cabrera joins Mets

The New York Mets signed outfielder Melky Cabrera to a minor league contract.

What It Means:

Cabrera is expected to be added to the Mets' 60-man player pool. This is the fifth club Cabrera has signed with since the end of the 2016 season. Last year, the 35-year-old slashed .280/.313/.399 with 7 home runs and 47 RBI across 397 plate appearances for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He's hit .280 each of the last two seasons and hasn't been below that mark since 2015. Cabrera also set a personal-best with a 10.3 strikeout percentage last year, so contact clearly isn't an issue, even if he lacks in the power department. Turning 36 in August, Cabrera will likely play a reserve role for the Mets.

Per FanDuel Sportsbook, the Mets have the eighth-best odds (+2200) to win the 2020 World Series.
