Cardinals' Jordan Hicks (diabetes) opts out of 2020 season

St. Louis Cardinals reliever Jordan Hicks has opted out of the scheduled 2020 season due to "pre-existing health concerns."

What It Means:

Hicks is a Type 1 diabetic. He underwent Tommy John surgery just over a year ago and was expected to join the Cardinals' bullpen around August, but suffered a setback during rehab. The right-hander projects to be the club's primary closer in 2021. Giovanny Gallegos would be the presumed favorite for save opportunities in St. Louis, but he hasn't joined the team due to travel reasons. Carlos Martinez or Ryan Helsley could wind up opening the year as the Cardinals' closer.

Per FanDuel Sportsbook, the Cardinals are tied for having the 13th-best odds (+2600) to win the 2020 World Series.
