Cardinals' Jordan Hicks had Tommy John setback

St. Louis Cardinals reliever Jordan Hicks had a setback in his Tommy John rehab before deciding to opt out of the 2020 season.

What It Means:

Hicks wouldn't have been able to pitch until September due to inflammation. He's a Type 1 diabetic, but the setback finalized his decision to opt out. The 23-year-old right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery just over a year ago and was initially expected to join the Cardinals' bullpen around August. Hicks projects to be the club's primary closer in 2021. Giovanny Gallegos would be the presumed favorite for save opportunities in St. Louis, but he hasn't joined the team due to travel reasons. Carlos Martinez or Ryan Helsley could wind up opening the year as the Cardinals' closer. Andrew Miller may also see save opportunities.

Per FanDuel Sportsbook, the Cardinals are tied for having the 13th-highest odds (+2600) to win the 2020 World Series.
