Carlos Martinez trending toward Cardinals' rotation
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez has “earned every opportunity” to be in the rotation, per manager Mike Shildt.
Martinez was previously expected to open the season in the Cardinals' bullpen following a late arrival to camp. However, he's now in line for a rotation spot after a strong showing in workouts. Kwang-Hyun Kim or Ryan Helsley could see save opportunities for St. Louis, at least until Giovanny Gallegos (undisclosed) is available. Martinez recorded his fifth straight ERA below 3.65 last season with a career-best WHIP (1.18) and strikeout percentage (26.5).
numberFire's models expect Martinez to record a 3.91 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 44 strikeouts and 17 walks over 43 2/3 innings this season.
