Anthony DeSclafani (shoulder) opening season on Reds IL

The Cincinnati Reds placed starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani on the 10-day injured list with a mild right teres major strain.

What It Means:

The injury is to DeSclafani's throwing (right) shoulder. Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer believes DeSclafani may be able to return after missing only one start. Tyler Mahle is expected to replace DeSclafani in the Reds' rotation. The 29-year-old right-hander posted a 3.89 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 167 strikeouts and 49 walks over 166 2/3 innings (31 starts) last season.

Operating under the assumption that DeSclafani returns soon, numberFire's models project him for a 4.53 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 53 strikeouts and 16 walks over 55 2/3 innings this season.
