Lance McCullers lands on Astros IL with sore shoulder

The Houston Astros placed starting pitcher Lance McCullers on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a sore right shoulder.

What It Means:

McCullers is coming off his worst start of the season and his shoulder may have been a factor. Astros manager Dusty Baker said the issue is "short term" and that an MRI may not be necessary. Framber Valdez (finger) and Jake Odorizzi (forearm) will return from the IL for this weekend's series with the San Diego Padres, so McCullers' injury comes at a convenient time for Houston.

McCullers is averaging 35.5 FanDuel points per game this season. His ERA (2.96) is a career-high and his strikeout percentage is the second-best of the right-hander's career. McCullers' xWOBA (.304) is also back on par with his career average (.298) after spiking to a personal-worst .327 last season.
