Blue Jays claim Jesus Montero from Mariners

The Toronto Blue Jays claimed first baseman Jesus Montero off waivers from the Mariners.

What It Means:

Toronto is an attractive landing spot for any fledgling slugger, but it may be too late to save Montero. He is the owner of a brutal .253/.295/.398 career batting line at the major league level and he looked terrible at the plate in this year's Cactus League. Maybe the big change of scenery will work some kind of magic for the 26-year-old. That sort of thing has happened before at Rogers Centre.

Montero has showed signs of promise, posting a monstrous .420 wOBA last season in 430 plate appearances in Triple-A in 2015, but he had an underwhelming .223/.250/.411 slash line (.284 wOBA) in 116 plate appearances with the big league club. He hit five home runs in that span, however.
