Phillies sign Will Venable to minors contract

The Philadelphia Phillies signed outfielder Will Venable to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

What It Means:

Venable was released by the Cleveland Indians over the weekend after batting .133 with a .404 OPS in Cactus League play. He could work his way into semi-regular starts with the rebuilding Phillies, but the 33-year-old outfielder has batted just .233/.303/.336 over the last two seasons.

Venable posted just a .296 wOBA in 390 plate appearances last season with the San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers, hitting six home runs and stealing 16 bases.
