J.J. Hoover

J.J. Hoover removed from the Reds' closer role

Cincinnati Reds reliever J.J. Hoover has been removed from the Reds' ninth-inning role.

What It Means:

Reds manager Bryan Price said he's going to use a committee until a steady option emerges. Tony Cingrani and Blake Wood both struggled on Wednesday afternoon against the Colorado Rockies and Hoover had a rough outing Tuesday night. Caleb Cotham, acquired from the New York Yankees in the Aroldis Chapman trade, could be the dark horse to take over as the Reds' new closer.

The 28-year-old Hoover registered a cool 2.94 ERA (4.62 xFIP), 1.17 WHIP, 19.7 strikeout percentage and 11.7 walk percentage -- both worse than league average -- in 64 1/3 innings last season for Cincinnati. He owns a 15.19 ERA in 5 1/3 innings pitched this season with just a 14.3 strikeout percentage. Our models currently project Hoover to post a 3.27 ERA with a 21.5 strikeout percentage in 63 innings pitched in 2016.
