Mets looking into relief help from Angels' Joe Smith

The New York Mets are "monitoring" relief pitchers Joe Smith of the Los Angeles Angels, Chris Withrow of the Atlanta Braves, and Jeremy Jeffress of the Milwaukee Brewers, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

What It Means:

The Mets have been connected to Jeffress previously, but Smith's and Withrow's names are new as the club seeks relief help. Smith, who began his career with the Mets, has had a down season, but that might mean the Mets can get him at a discount. Jeffress and Withrow are still under team control for a few seasons.

Smith holds a 4.36 ERA and 4.28 SIERA, with a 16.6 percent strikeout rate and 9.0 percent walk rate over 33 innings. Jeffress has a 2.23 ERA and 3.21 SIERA, with a 17.3 percent strikeout rate and 5.8 walk rate in 40 1/3 inning pitched. Withrow has compiled a 3.33 ERA and 4.74 SIERA, with 17.5 percent strikeout rate and 11.4 walk rate across 27 innings.
