Prince Fielder to undergo fusion surgery on Friday for Rangers

Texas Rangers designated hitter Prince Fielder (neck) will undergo fusion surgery on Friday.

What It Means:

This was expected, but is nonetheless a huge blow for the Rangers, and even more of a troubling setback for Fielder -- who posted a .348 wOBA in June -- himself. He already had season-ending fusion surgery on his neck in 2014, and with Friday's surgery, Fielder at the very least, will miss the remainder of this season. Next season (2017) and beyond could be in jeopardy as well. He is owed $96 million over the next four years.

Fielder's season will end with a slash of .212/.292/.334, with eight home runs and a .276 wOBA in 370 plate appearances and a career-worst -1.8 fWAR. He is one of two players with a fWAR of worse than -1.0 this season.
