Jaime Garcia to start on short rest Saturday for Cardinals

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jaime Garcia will start on short rest Saturday against the Miami Marlins.

What It Means:

Garcia will throw on four days rest instead of the normal five because of Tuesday's doubleheader. Manager Mike Matheny considered using Tyler Lyons to make a spot start, but ultimately decided to go with Garcia and his 3.97 ERA instead. If Matheny chooses to keep Garcia on a short leash, Jerome Williams will be available to pitch in long relief.

Garcia's 3.83 xFIP is slightly lower than his ERA. He primarily relies on ground balls to get outs, as his 57.30 ground ball percentage ranks fourth-highest this season. We project Garcia to record a 3.84 ERA and a below average 16.39 strikeout percentage in 72 2/3 innings over the rest of the season.
