Mets scratch Steven Matz (shoulder) from Friday start

New York Mets pitcher Steven Matz has been scratched from Friday's start versus the Philadelphia Phillies after feeling renewed soreness in his left shoulder.

What It Means:

A bullpen session went well Wednesday, but Matz's shoulder didn't rebound as hoped on Thursday. His year is likely over, but manager Sandy Alderson hasn't ruled the lefty out just yet. Gabriel Ynoa draws the Friday start against Philadelphia.

Matz is having a strong second season in the bigs, with a 3.51 SIERA, 23.6 percent strikeout rate and 5.7 percent walk rate through 22 starts (132 1/3 innings) -- all of which are improvements from his rookie numbers in 2015.
