Major League Baseball suspends Nationals' A.J. Cole five games

Washington Nationals starting pitcher A.J. Cole has been suspended five games by Major League Baseball for throwing at Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang on Sunday.

What It Means:

Cole was retaliating at Kang for a fake tag on Bryce Harper in the third inning that resulted in Harper injuring his left thumb. The attempted beanball actually went behind Kang, but Cole was still fined by the MLB. The 24-year-old right-hander is appealing the suspension and will remain active in the meantime, so he may not end up serving the suspension until 2017.

In his second year in the bigs, Cole has pitched to a 5.09 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 24.3 strikeout percentage across 35 1/3 innings of work.
