Giants' Will Smith diagnosed with UCL sprain

San Francisco Giants reliever Will Smith has a sprain and strain in his left elbow, an MRI has confirmed.

What It Means:

There's a chance the injury will require Tommy John surgery, but no decision has been made as of now. If Smith is forced to go under the knife, therefore ending his 2017 season before it even starts, the Giants will be forced to identify a new setup man.

The 27-year-old southpaw turned in a 2.95 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 34.7 strikeout percentage across 18 1/3 innings (26 appearances) for the Giants last season after being acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in August.
