Jeanmar Gomez to open year as Phillies' closer
Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jeanmar Gomez will open the 2017 regular season as the club's closer.
What It Means:
Gomez earned the job by posting a 0.93 ERA across 9 2/3 Grapefruit League innings this spring, but there's still plenty of competition behind him in Hector Neris and Joaquin Benoit. The 29-year-old right-hander struggled to a 4.85 ERA in 2016 while blowing six saves in 43 opportunities.
numberFire's metrics believe Gomez will record a 3.24 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 15.9 strikeout percentage and 23 saves across 63 2/3 innings this upcoming season.
