Joaquin Benoit named new Phillies closer

Philadelphia Phillies manager Pete Mackanin announced on Monday that Joaquin Benoit would be the team's closer for the time being.

What It Means:

Benoit replaces Jeanmar Gomez, who has tossed just three innings but has given up five runs including two home runs already. The 38-year-old Benoit has 51 career saves but maybe just temporarily holding the closer spot for Hector Neris. For now, Benoit is worth a pickup for those in need of saves.

Benoit posted a 2.81 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP and 52 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched last year between the Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays.
