Matt Cain to make a spot start for the Giants on Thursday
San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain will start Thursday's game versus the St. Louis Cardinals after the Giants' scratched Madison Bumgarner.
Bumgarner won't pitch with flu-like symptoms, giving Cain his first start in two weeks and just his second since being demoted to the bullpen at the end of July. Cain hasn't gone more than 4 four innings since July 31, so expect Thursday's start to be short with the Giants' leaning on their bullpen versus the Cardinals.
Cain has struggled this season, posting a 5.75 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, and a .310 opponents' batting average against through 114 1/3 innings pitched.
