Padres' Josh Johnson to have third Tommy John surgery

San Diego Padres pitcher Josh Johnson will undergo a third Tommy John surgery, according to a report from CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.

What It Means:

This is a devastating break for Johnson, as he injured himself trying to come back from his second Tommy John surgery. Heyman reports that Johnson wants to continue trying to pitch again one day, instead of choosing to retire.

Johnson last pitched in the big leagues in 2013, throwing 81.1 innings for the Toronto Blue Jays. He made one rehab start this season after not pitching at all in 2014. He has a long way to go before pitching in the majors again, but it will tough not to root for him to get there.
