5 NFL Stats to Know Through Week 6

Week 6 of the 2019 NFL season saw Tom Brady become the player with the second most regular season passing yards in NFL history. It saw Brett Maher become the second player with two career field goals over 60 yards, after former Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks kicker Sebastian Janikowski.

The returning Sam Darnold, back after missing three games due to mono, become the youngest player in the Super Bowl era to throw a touchdown pass of at least 90 yards. Week 6 also saw a new record for interceptions thrown in an International Series game, after Jameis Winston tossed five picks in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' loss to the Carolina Panthers at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Last week had all this and much, much more.

Here are five other stats to know -- both traditional and our advanced statistics -- from Week 6 of the season.

Stefon Diggs Put Up 43.5 PPR Points

All had not been rosy for Stefon Diggs and the Minnesota Vikings in the last few weeks -- it would be fair to say. The wide receiver was fined after missing practice, and rumours of him supposedly seeking a trade were beginning to swirl. The main crux of the displeasure seemed to stem from his usage, or lack thereof, in the Vikings' offense.

Well, he certainly got used on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles,

Diggs caught seven of his 11 targets for 167 yards and three touchdowns against the Eagles, giving him a whopping 43.5 PPR points. In his previous five games of 2019, he had only mustered 43.3 points combined. He scored touchdowns from 62 of 51 yards out, making him the first Vikings player with at least two 50-yard touchdowns in the same game since Randy Moss in Week 5 of the 2000 season. Diggs also became the fourth Vikings player to have 150 yards and three touchdowns in the same game, after Moss, Ahmad Rashad and Sammy White.

It would be unwise to assume that this will be the new norm for Diggs, as he is unlikely to go up against as woeful a secondary as the Eagles every week. There is also the larger question regarding volume, as Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins attempted less than 30 passes for the fourth time in six games this season. But Diggs' talent should keep him in the WR2 conversation for the next few weeks.

The New England D/ST Scored 28 Fantasy Points

The form of the New England Patriots on defense in 2019 has been nothing short of sensational, and they've passed on this production to their owners in fantasy football. On Thursday night, the Patriots D/ST racked up 28 fantasy points against the New York Giants, the third time this season they've amassed more than 20 points in a game.

Their output was bolstered by three interceptions and two defensive touchdowns, which made up for an absence of sacks. They took down Giants quarterback Daniel Jones only once, after recording at least five sacks in each of their previous four games. Incidentally, Jones's three interceptions in this game matched the amount thrown by Eli Manning in his five career games (including the postseason) against the Patriots.

The Patriots also blocked their second punt of the year, improving their record to 6-1 in the Bill Belichick era in games in which they've managed to block one.

The outstanding nature of the Patriots' defense in fantasy terms is best demonstrated by the fact that their tally of 123 fantasy points is the 14th highest output in the 2019 season. That's right, only 13 players have more fantasy points this season than the Patriots D/ST.

There can be little doubt that the Patriots have benefitted from playing some truly woeful offenses so far in 2019, but that shouldn't diminish the greatness of their defensive play. They should remain in play as one of football's top defenses in Week 7 when they take on the New York Jets, despite the return of Sam Darnold.

Lamar Jackson Ran for 152 yards

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson provided the watching world with another performance in which he displayed his dazzling abilities as a runner as well as an efficient passer. Against the hapless Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Jackson passed for 236 yards whilst also rushing for 152. It was Jackson's third career game with at least 115 rushing yards, making him the first quarterback to have three such games in their first two seasons.

Jackson became only the second quarterback to pass for 200 yards and rush for 150 in the same game, and the first to do so in the regular season in NFL history. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick had 263 passing yards and 181 rushing yards against the Green Bay Packers during the 2012 postseason.

Jackson's 152 yards are the fourth most by a quarterback in NFL history, and he joins Kaepernick, Michael Vick and Tobin Rote as the only quarterbacks to rush for 150 yards in a single game.

Jackson and the Ravens face the Seattle Seahawks next, and he may have his work cut out for him if he wants to extend his run of at least 66 yards in his last three games. The Seahawks have only allowed 87 rushing yards to quarterbacks in 2019, but they have given up two rushing touchdowns to the position.

Jared Goff Averaged -0.55 Passing NEP per Drop Back

The 2019 campaign hasn't been a vintage season for Jared Goff and the Los Angeles Rams on offense, but it sunk to new depths on Sunday in their loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Goff completed just 13 of his 24 pass attempts for a woeful 78 yards, and no touchdowns. He scored 1.1 fantasy points, the second lowest total of his career.

His counting stats were awful, but his efficiency was also absolutely shocking. Goff's Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back was -0.55 on Sunday, the second lowest mark by any quarterback in Week 6. Daniel Jones managed -0.69 for the Giants against the Patriots. Coming into the game, Goff hadn't averaged less than 0.00 in any game this season, and he was coming off a Week 5 performance when his 0.31 clip was the sixth best among all quarterbacks.

Goff's poor showing was just another victim of a brutal 49ers defense in 2019. They have done a wonderful job locking down quarterbacks for the most part this season, as the table below demonstrates.

Goff and the Rams will look to bounce back from their offensive horror show in Week 7 when they take on the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons' defense has crumbled as the season has progressed, and quarterbacks have enjoyed themselves immensely against Dan Quinn's beleaguered unit. The Falcons have allowed an average of 306.8 passing yards per game over their last five games as well as 13 total touchdown passes in their last four.

The Falcons are a mess right now, and it's sadly overshadowing the form and production of one of their key players.

Matt Ryan Passed for 300 Yards -- Again

The Falcons' defensive struggles, plus a far-from-convincing ground attack, has meant an abundance of passing opportunities for their quarterback Matt Ryan. Sunday marked only the second time all season that he had attempted fewer than 40 passes in a game, but but he still managed 36 attempts. Ryan completed 30 of them for 356 yards, ensuring that he had at least 300 yards in every game this season.

Ryan is only the third quarterback in NFL history to pass for 300 yards in his teams first six games of a season, joining Kurt Warner and Steve Young in achieving the feat. Going back to last season, Ryan has the longest active streak of 300-yard games with seven. He is only two behind the all-time record of nine, which has been achieved twice. The first instance occurred between the 2011 and 2012 seasons, while the second spanned 2012 and 2013 campaigns. The quarterback to achieve the feat both times was Drew Brees.

Ryan joins Brees, Patrick Mahomes, Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning as the only quarterbacks with seven or more consecutive 300-yard games. His 20 touchdown passes during his streak is the lowest among the group.

In order to keep his streak alive, Ryan will have to become only the second quarterback to throw for 300 yards against the Rams this season. Jameis Winston had 385 yards back in Week 4. Ryan has eclipsed the 300-yard mark just once in five career games against the Rams (including the postseason), and that was back in 2013.
