Vikings' Irv Smith Jr. expected to see expanded role
Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. should see an expanded role this season, writes Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com.
Smith never had more than 60 yards or 5 catches in any game as a rookie, but he did catch 36 passes (47 targets) for 311 yards and 2 touchdowns on a 60.0 percent snap share while working behind Kyle Rudolph on the depth chart. Even with Rudolph still penciled in as the starter, the offseason departure of Stefon Diggs should open up more looks for Smith in 2020. The rising sophomore was in on between 68.4-85.2 percent of the snaps during a four-game stretch that Adam Thielen missed last season.
Smith averaged 5.0 FanDuel points during that four-game period. He graded 24th in receiving on Pro Football Focus out of 35 tight ends with at least 40 targets.
