Christian McCaffrey, Panthers reportedly agree on historic extension
Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey signed a 4-year extension, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Schefter says the deal averages $16 million per year, making McCaffrey the highest-paid running back in the history of the league. Big running back deals have become a rarity in the NFL, but McCaffrey is only entering his age-24 season and has never missed a game through three years. He's also arguably the best in the world at his job and fresh off a campaign where he became only the third player in NFL history to accumulate 1,000 rushing and receiving yards in the same season. McCaffrey's 2,392 yards from scrimmage was the third-most all-time in a single season and his 116 receptions broke his own running back record. It's worth noting that he accomplished all of this with Kyle Allen and Will Grier starting 14-of-16 games.
McCaffrey averaged 25.8 FanDuel points, finishing only behind Lamar Jackson (28.2), and 149.5 yards from scrimmage with 19 touchdowns last season. He led all running backs with 91.0 Net Expected Points, finishing with over 24.0 more NEP than any other back.
