Giants' Leonard Williams expected to sign his franchise tag

New York Giants defensive lineman Leonard Williams is going to sign his franchise tag tender, according to Giants' beat reporter Pat Leonard.

What It Means:

The former 6th overall draft pick in 2015 was acquired by the Giants in a trade with the New York Jets six before Week 9 of last season, in which the Giants parted ways with their 2020 third-round pick and a conditional 2021 fifth-round pick. Williams played all eight games for the Giants after the deal, recording 31 pressures, 1 sack, 12 quarterback hits, and 18 hurries. Williams will return to a Giants defense that ranked 6th overall against the run and 25th overall in pass rush last season, per Pro Football Focus.

Over the final 8 weeks of last season, Williams earned a grade of 76.5 from Pro Football Focus, an improvement from the mark of 61.5 he received from his first 7 weeks with the Jets. Williams ranked 33rd at this position against the run and 47th in pass rush.
