Lewerke was a three-year starter at Michigan State and became the first quarterback in school history to record more than 8,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing. However, his best season came in 2017 when he threw for 2,793 yards with 20 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He then averaged 2,559.5 yards the next two seasons with 25 touchdowns and 24 interceptions, including a career-high 13 picks in Lewerke's senior season. He may be able to land a backup gig if the Patriots decide to hold another quarterback behind Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer.

Lewerke earned just a 68.4 passing grade from Pro Football Focus in 2019, ranking 71st among all FBS quarterbacks with 300 or more dropbacks on the year. He never earned a single-season passing grade above 68.9 (2017) from Pro Football Focus in his three years with the Spartans.
