Lions' Kerryon Johnson expected to lose workhorse role

Detroit Lions running back Kerryon Johnson is going to share carries with second-round rookie D'Andre Swift, per comments from general manager Bob Quinn.

What It Means:

"I think we always need multiple backs," Quinn said. "It’s a position where guys get hit. They take a pounding. So, we’ve just got to make sure we have good depth and guys that can go out there and make plays for us.” Johnson, a second-round pick in 2018, has missed 14 of a possible 32 games with multiple knee injuries. He averaged 19.2 touches over the Lions' first five games last year before injuries set in, but it sounds like that workload will be scaled back in 2020. Johnson is expected to open the year as the starter, but Swift could wind up taking the top spot on the depth chart by the end of the season.

Johnson averaged 10.0 FanDuel points (RB33) and 66.3 yards from scrimmage with 4 touchdowns in eight games last season. His yards per carry crashed from 5.4 as a rookie to 3.6 in 2019. He also required 14.1 rush attempts per broken tackle, compared to just 8.4 the year before. Johnson ranked 39th in numberFire's advanced rushing metric out of 45 backs with at least 100 carries.
