Chargers: Joshua Kelley can play Melvin Gordon role
Los Angeles Chargers fourth-round rookie running back Joshua Kelley can take the role of Melvin Gordon, believes head coach Anthony Lynn.
"We feel like he can get to that point, I can tell you that," Lynn said about Kelley stepping into Gordon's role as someone who can be counted on in goal-line and short-yardage situations. Gordon averaged 17.0 touches per game last season. Kelley could beat out Justin Jackson for the bulk of those touches behind Austin Ekeler.
Kelley only had 3 fumbles on 454 attempts the past two seasons, but he wasn't very elusive. He ranked 53rd in yards after contact (641) and tied for 46th in missed tackles forced (44) in 2019 among running backs with at least 100 attempts. Kelley's contributions in the passing game are a concern, as he earned pass protection grades below 60.0 each of the past two seasons.
