Damien Williams, Clyde Edwards-Helaire give Chiefs '1-2 punch'

Kansas City Chiefs running backs Damien Williams and first-round rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire will form a "one-two punch," believes general manager Brett Veach.

What It Means:

“I certainly think it’s going to be a shared load,” Veach said. “Damien has been in this offense for a long time and certainly has shown what he can do on that playoff run. The guy’s a really good pass protector [and] can catch the football. I mean, both these guys can run and catch and certainly Damien will come in as the starting running back and Clyde will have to come in here and compete for playing time, which we think he’ll do. But I think it will be a one-two punch.” Williams averaged 19.0 touches per game and racked up 6 touchdowns during the Chiefs' Super Bowl run, but he only saw 12.8 touches over 11 games in the regular season. His 111 carries were more than twice as many than in any previous season and Williams also set a career-high with 30 catches. He performed well with 64.6 yards from scrimmage per game and 7 touchdowns, but Williams has never proven capable of handling three-down work over the course of a full season. The veteran may see the majority of the early-down touches to start the year, but Edwards-Helaire could very well take over by the playoffs.

Williams averaged 11.5 FanDuel points (RB25) and 64.6 yards from scrimmage per game with 7 touchdowns in the regular season. His 5.0 yards per touch ranked 23rd among all backs to average 6.25 touches per game. Among the five Chiefs' running backs with at least 10 carries last season, his 40.5 success rate was second-worst on the team.
