Jaguars, Chris Thompson agree to one-year deal
The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed running back Chris Thompson, formerly of the Washington Redskins, to a one-year deal.
A former fifth-round selection by Washington back in 2013, Thompson has spent his entire seven-year career with the Redskins, operating as a pass-catching specialist out of the backfield. He will be reunited with former Redskins head coach and current Jaguars offensive coordinator Jay Gruden. During his last five seasons operating in Gruden's offense, Thompson averaged 55.5 targets, 41.2 receptions (74.2%), 349 receiving yards, and 1.8 touchdowns per year. Thompson averaged 9.1 yards per reception last season, the second-highest mark of his career. His arrival doesn't bode well for Leonard Fournette's passing-game usage after the former 4th overall pick saw a career-high 95 targets last season, a decline seems likely.
Thompson earned a receiving grade of 66.1 from Pro Football Focus last season, 41st among running backs, and slightly higher than Fournette (65.4).
