Cam Newton reportedly open to right backup role

Free agent quarterback Cam Newton is willing to consider offers to be a backup quarterback, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

What It Means:

Rapoport says Newton hasn't ruled out a backup job in "the right situation." There don't appear to be any starting jobs left, so Newton will have to decide between waiting for an opportunity or choosing a preferred spot as a backup. He only made it through the first two games last season before succumbing to a foot injury and he's also undergone multiple surgeries on his throwing shoulder since 2016. Teams understandably want to conduct a full physical, but they haven't been able to do so due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Newton turns 32 on Monday.

Cam averaged 8.8 FanDuel points with 286.0 passing yards and no touchdowns in two appearances last season. His 5.9 adjusted yards per pass attempt also marked a new career-low. He also took away a personal-worst .04 expected points per play, ranking 39th out of 46 quarterbacks with 90-plus dropbacks.
