Bengals have discussed an extension with Joe Mixon
Cincinnati Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin said the team began discussing a contract extension for running back Joe Mixon this week.
Rumors circulated earlier this offseason that Mixon was contemplating holding out for the 2020 season if the team was unwilling to sign him to a long-term deal, so this is at least a step in the right direction. Mixon has been as reliable as they come for the Bengals since entering the league and has posted over 1,000 rushing yards in each of the last two seasons without fumbling, but teams across the league are growing wary of signing running backs to long-term deals.
It's certainly understandable for the 23-year-old to expect a new deal after handling the fifth-most carries in the league last season. He fought uphill battles all last year, averaging just 1.8 rushing yards before first contact behind the team's leaky offensive line, but still managed to grind out as many yards after contact per attempt as Ezekiel Elliott (2.3). If the team does get Mixon under contract before the 2020 season, he could be in line for a huge year with Joe Burrow under center.
