Payton: Jameis Winston will have the opportunity to start for Saints in future seasons
New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston will reportedly have the opportunity to start for the team once Drew Brees leaves.
Asked about Winston's future with the team, Sean Payton said "He’s going to have that opportunity (to start in New Orleans) the minute Drew leaves". Payton also mentioned that the current starter, Taysom Hill, would have the same opportunity. Assuming Brees retires after this season, which is the expectation around the Saints, it sounds like there will be an open quarterback competition heading into the 2021 season. Slightly complicating things is Winston's contract, which is a one-year deal he signed back in April. The Saints and Winston may need to negotiate a contract extension or a new deal before his exact role has been decided. It will be an offseason development to keep an eye on.
The Saints have a 12.0% chance of winning the Super Bowl this season, according to numberFire's NFL Team Rankings. Their odds are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for third-best in the league, behind the Green Bay Packers (13.6%) and the Kansas City Chiefs (18.9%).
