Patriots replace Chandler Jones with Chris Long

The New England Patriots signed defensive end Chris Long, formerly of the St. Louis Rams, to a one-year contract.

What It Means:

It made too much sense after the Patriots shipped RE Chandler Jones to the Arizona Cardinals via trade on Tuesday. Long -- who was released by the Rams -- will step in and fill the roster void, though he's not guaranteed a starting spot. Long has battled injuries the last two years, and he turns 31 later this month. Still, it's a fine landing spot for Long, who's determined to breathe life back into his career. Long has 54.5 career sacks in 114 games.

New England ranked 12th in Adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points (NEP) per play in 2015. Long was a part of a St. Louis Rams' defense which ranked eighth in Adjusted Defensive NEP per play.
