Panthers to 'redefine' offense, run ball more
Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said he wants to "redefine who we are" on offense and that includes running the ball more.
Rhule's comments come after the Panthers logged 41 pass attempts and 23 carries in Sunday's overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Darnold completed just 17 of those attempts for 207 yards (4.1 yards per attempt) with a touchdown and a pick, and he was sacked four times. Chuba Hubbard, who rushed 16 times for 61 yards and a score, could see a larger workload in Week 7 against the New York Giants. The Panthers may also want to get Royce Freeman more involved. Christian McCaffrey (hamstring, IR) will remain out for at least two more games.
The Panthers are throwing the ball on 58.7% of their plays this season, ranked right in the middle of the league at 16th. However, they have been more pass-heavy in the last two contests and are dropping back at a 61.6% rate. They have a solid opportunity to establish the run in Week 7 as opponents are calling running plays against the Giants at the sixth-highest rate in the league (45.6%).
